Technology incubators

Technology incubators are facilities which offer a nurturing environment for individuals and businesses to develop commercially.  Incubators provide accommodation, laboratory and office facilities, business support and mentoring. They can also help secure access to venture capital and legal, financial and marketing expertise.

The Department continues to assists small scale businesses by supporting a number of technology incubators.

i.lab Incubator Pty Ltd
Winner of the 2006 incubator of the year, the i.lab Incubator aims to facilitate the development of high technology industries in Queensland by providing mentoring and support for entrepreneurs. It does this by nurturing start-up technology businesses over a two-year period.

Located in Brisbane, i.lab has assisted over 90 start-up companies, whose clients have progressed to create 389 technology jobs and raised $78 million in investment capital. It also has external members and offers 'virtual incubation' giving businesses the flexibility to choose where they work from while still accessing full support and benefits.

Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast
Over the last seven years, the Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast Business Incubator has supported the start-up and growth of over 51 businesses in a variety of technology sectors. It attracts, selects and develops high potential start-up businesses and is a company of the University of the Sunshine Coast.

In 2008, the Centre opened the Business Accelerator for established technology and knowledge economy businesses and service firms in sectors such as legal, accounting, venture capital, market research, human resources, and other firms with services of interest to growth orientated technology businesses.

The Centre also runs a program to support motivated students to start businesses, including the Enterprises program run in collaboration with the University of Cambridge.

Gold Coast Innovation Centre
The Gold Coast Innovation Centre provides the resources, mentoring and business acumen necessary for early stage, high growth technology based companies to develop. With facilities located at the Southport campus of the Griffith University, the Innovation Centre receives joint funding from the Queensland Government, the University and the Council.

The Centre currently assists three resident clients and four virtual clients through its expert advisory panel of 17 recognised professional services providers and its valuable industry networks.
